Thanks for the essay and lots of photos. I have a lot of photos from Shanghai from 1987-1994. During the early days, the bikes outnumbered cars by about 100:1 Now I am told it is much different, and sadly I am sure it is true. For me one of mybest memories is the sound of a bike bell, in the dark streets of Shanghai, as I walked down the road or sidewalk.
Doug, I was thrilled to read you are staying in Holland for a while. I can feel that is pure joy for you!!! it would be a place i would choose to live as well, were I not already stuck in Switzerland. Holland is a great place, well, just about everything! Carry on as the Brits would say and enjoy!!
Put me at the forefront of the biking brigade (or I'm also happy to be the sweeper to make sure no one gets lost). Let's do a little poking around the fietspaden in April when we come over for the NL Waterway Cruise.
I suppose the good news here is that bikers have their clearly marked path, pedestrians have theirs, and cars have whatever is left. Helps that everyone is mixed together. Though I wish mopeds would get off the bike path! And e-bikes which seem to go faster than everyone else. I'm glad you're a reader, Tom!
I'd love it, Bruce. Will happily ride along with your group when you get here!
I got rid of my fancy Nikon camera and seem to get better results with the phone. Also, it's easier to carry around.
This is well-written and very interesting.
Thanks, Florine. If we lived closer together, I'd ask you if you would like to have coffee at the bakery!

Great idea! Very healthy and much easier than our smokey (but very clean) ride across Idaho!
Am still traumatized by the bear who tried to get into the garbage container.

It's an adventure! I'm very thankful. But I was thankful to be "stuck in Switzerland" for several years too!
