It was 11 years ago, Bob. And it was fabulous. Saw the Big 5 on safari and even took the ferry to Robben Island. (Prisons aren't usually on a travel itinerary, but four South African presidents were once political prisoners spent time there.)

Love what writing about a place and people does to our minds—a magical mystery tour. thanks for reminding me about these books…..I need to smell and touch these again too.

Hi Rein, so good to hear from you. I miss you and all my friends at APCH! That blog post was from 2011. And my group had a wonderful time, saw the Big 5, went to Robben Island, and best of all spent a weekend with a wonderful church in Acornhoek...wedding on Saturday, worship on Sunday. All the best to you, my friend.

Africa, Doug...? Great!!

As a Teenager my friends and I have played out the books that we have read about the stories of Africa, like "Paul Krüger de Held van Zuid Afrika"; the series of "Tarzan of the Apes".

Our school teacher read us some funny children's fantasy-stories about Africa and we learned some old South African songs at the Beatrix School in Palembang in South Sumatra.

My father was a hunter in Sumatra and as for us, his sons, hunting- and jungle games have triggered lots of fantasy.

We didn't have much money but we had a lot of fantasy! Floating Banana trees in the wide and deep Musi River were our Canoes or...crocodiles :)

The Lord Badem Powel's "Scouting for Boys" still has an influence on my way of looking at potentials of the younger generations.

"The poverty of past is todays' riches" (RC :)

Enjoy your traveling, Doug!

Greetings,

Rein Carlier

I'm looking forward to hearing about your travels. We went to Kenya for the first time last October, and thoroughly enjoyed the game parks, and the energy of Nairobi. I was last in South Africa in 1994, and it was a beautiful country, much like a rural California. I hope you have the chance to experience the nature and wild animals!

Tom, this happened 11 years ago! It's a reprint. I had a wonderful time in South Africa. Saw the Big 5 on safari and even visited Robben Island, a trip I won't ever forget.
